In 1991, Lake Neusiedl National Park was established in Hungary, covering the entire Hungarian half of the Neusiedl landscape, and in 1992 the Nationalpark Neusiedler See-Seewinkel in Austria. The most spectacular creatures in the area are birds. The Fertőmellék hill range is a continuation of the Lajta Mountains in a southern direction, considering the bedrock of the so-called “Lime limestone”. The Szárhalmi Forest, located between Sopron and Fertőrákos, is of outstanding nature conservation value.
